Nespresso Pixie Review
I almost gave up. That’s right. I decided that I was spending too much money on coffee chain lattes, so I went on to research for an espresso machine.
That way I can make my own and save money. Boy was that a disaster.
I couldn’t believe how expensive and complicated it is to make a good shot of espresso.
Then, I stumbled upon the Nespresso Pixie. I was really suspicious. I mean, how can this tiny little gadget make good espresso…and do it almost completely without any effort on my part.
But, it did get me really curious. Because if this machine does what it promises to do, then my quest is over. I’ve found the holy grail.
So, I did what any suspicious shopper would do…research. And this article is the result of that. By the way, sometimes people mistakenly spell it Nespresso PIXI, it’s just a typo.
Quick Nespresso Pixie Video Demo. The fact is, it’s so easy, it only takes a minute to explain.
What Is The Nespresso Pixie?
It is a machine, that brews espresso from individual portion sized capsules that are filled with different flavors of coffee grounds, almost automatically.
As you can see from the video, the hardest part is picking the flavor. If you know how to throw a can of pop in the garbage can, you already know how to operate this machine.
This is all you need to know to operate the Nespresso Pixie.
First, pick a flavor.
Second, pick the serving size, 1 or 2.
Third…there is no third, that’s it, you are done.
Why Is It Better Than Traditional Espresso Machines?
Well, at least better for me. When I said traditional espresso machines are expensive and complicated, I was actually understating it.
Let me walk you through what it takes to make a shot of espresso the old way. Buy coffee beans. Ok, that’s not so bad. Just wait. Then buy a grinder. A half way decent grinder will set you back at least $350…the price can go up to around $1000.
Now buy an espresso machine. You are looking at somewhere between $1000 up to $3000, some cost even more. Fine, you got money to burn, and you got all the equipment.
Ok, now you have to learn to grind your coffee. What do you mean “learn”? That’s right, because there are many different grind settings on the grinder, anywhere from 25 to infinite! You don’t just push a button, you have to know exactly what size grounds you need. To complicate things even more, different beans needs to be ground into different sizes. We are not even ready to brew yet…not in the same ballpark…not even in the same State!
I’m going to shorten it because it will literally take me all day to explain.
You have to know how much grounds you need, too much or too little will mess it up. You have to learn to tamp (pack) the grounds…again, this is a skill you have to learn. You have to learn your machine. Each one does things differently. Different portafilter requires different kind of skill set. Water pressure, water temperature, brewing time, steaming the milk, frothing the milk…you got a headache yet? Because I got one from just typing it out!
And this is a shortened version. I mean, sure there are people out there who love to punish themselves, but I’m not one of them. I just want a great espresso drink, without any effort. Lazy? Yes. Do I care? No.
What About Drip Coffee Maker?
They sure are easy to use. But I want espresso, not coffee! Also, It is kind of a pain in the you know where. I make coffee for one, I never know how much grounds to use in a coffee maker, and I end up with a big pot of coffee that I don’t drink.
It sits around all day, and ends up tasting like tobacco spit. Sorry for the gross imagery. But you get my point.
I don’t want to waste coffee, I don’t want to deal with filters, and I don’t want to wash coffee pots everyday. Ok, I know I’m starting to sound like a spoiled brat, but hear me out.
I just want a great cup of espresso drink without the hassle. Is it too much to ask? No!
What’s So Great About The Nespresso Pixie?
The dark stormy clouds parts, and a ray of sunlight shines through.
The light travels through a kitchen window, and surrounds a small, super cool looking gadget…it’s the Nespresso Pixie!
Someone up there likes me and has been listening!
It is the best of the both worlds! It is super affordable.
You don’t have to pay tons of money for a grinder.
You don’t have to learn all that dosing, tamping, brewing stuff.
You don’t have to sell your soul to the Devil to pay for one of those expensive espresso maker.
You can make one perfect cup at a time. No need to deal with messy left over grounds, or washing coffee pots.
And the best part is, it makes great espresso, with no effort on your part, crazy fast, every single time, and nothing to clean up after!
Why can’t everything else in life be like that?
Why Nespresso Got It Right?
Well, the Nespresso espresso machines have been around for almost 40 years. It’s been really popular over in Europe, but it’s only recently reached the American shore.
They’ve had about 40 years to perfect this machine, and they did. I know you might be thinking: But there are other espresso makers that’s been around even longer!
That is true, and that’s why my second point will make more sense.
Nestlé group, which owns Nespresso, is the world’s largest food company in the world. One of the products they specialize in, is coffee. This is the advantage Nespresso has over other espresso makers. They’ve been dealing with coffee since olden times. They know how to process it, and package it to keep it fresh and flavorful.
Since they use their own coffee, they can design a machine specifically tailored to it, while other companies design machines that tries to tailor to everyone and everything.
Think about it, it’s easy to please one person’s preference. He or she likes sunny side up eggs, pancakes, and coffee. That’s very simple. Now, try to please 5000 people’s preferences! That can get really complicated.
What Is So Special About The Capsules?
You can’t talk about the Nespresso Pixie Espresso Maker without talking about the coffee capsules.
The capsule design is genius. It takes tons of work and cost out of the equation. Each individual capsule makes one drink. The coffee grounds are sealed in air tight.
They are color coded to indicate what flavor they are.
And since the capsules are designed specifically for the Nespresso machines, the Pixie is calibrated to the perfect setting to extract the best espresso possible.
That is why Nespresso is able to get such big flavors out of such a tiny machine.
Let’s Take A Look At The Nespresso Pixie Espresso Maker
Is It Really That Compact?
Yes! There is a reason why it’s called the Pixie.
It is measured at 12 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ x 9 3/4″. The smallest machine created by Nespresso.
Look at the Pixie sitting next to those small serving plates.
Do you have an RV? Does your kitchen have limited counter space? Then you’ll love the Nespresso Pixie Espresso Machine.
Its slim design means it can fit not only in your kitchen, but also on your desk at work or at the dorm.
It is also very portable. Take it on a road trip with you. Why suffer through cheap hotel coffee packs, when you can make your own. Just remember to pack it up with you on your way home.
Is It Really That Fast?
Yes, it takes about 15 to 20 seconds to heat up the water, and another 7 to 15 seconds to extract the espresso.
Since it’s a single serving machine, it only has to heat up one serving of water. Unlike traditional espresso machines, which has features like hot water dispenser, and steam functions, it takes longer than the Pixie.
Is It Really That Easy?
You got it. Like I have mentioned earlier, all the hard work is done for you. The grinding, the dosing, the packaging, the machine setting…etc.
You don’t have to know anything about how to make an espresso to enjoy one.
Push the on/off button, and it starts up automatically. Put the capsule in the brewing chamber. It’s designed so you can only fit it one way. Pick the serving size, and you are done. If you want a stronger or a weaker shot, you can stop the brewing early, or keep it going.
There is a water indicator that tells you when to fill up the water tank…you do have to do SOME finger lifting.
It shuts off automatically so you don’t get…shocked…by the electric bill. It also has a storage for the power cord so there is less clutter. If this thing can make a great Mac and Cheese, I might have to marry it!
Is It Really That Tasty?
That’s the million dollar question, right?
Who cares if it’s easy and fast, if it can’t make a decent cup of coffee, it’s not worth the card board its packed in.
As I mentioned earlier, the process of pulling espresso shots manually is ridiculously complicated (you read the whole thing like a good boy/girl, right?). If just one thing goes wrong, that will ruin the shot.
The reason the Nespresso Pixie Machine makes great espresso is because of consistency and optimal settings.
The beans are made to work with the machine, the machine is made to compliment the beans. And since both are made by Nespresso, hey work together, rather than against each other, to make great espresso shots.
The grind size is perfect, the pump pressure is just right, the water temperature is where it should be, the brew time right on the spot. You can’t make a mistake, because, well, you don’t control any of that. It’s done for you by expert with decades of experience.
Look at the crema comparison on the right. That top light brown layer is the holy grail of a great espresso shots. That means you’ve done everything right…well, you can take the credit, but we all know it’s the Pixie’s work.
Cleaning And Maintenance
You don’t have to worry about spilled coffee grounds, you don’t have to worry about coffee filters, you don’t have to clean and maintain a grinder if you had a traditional machine, and you don’t have to worry about cleaning the portafilter.
The used capsule drops into the capsule bin automatically. You can brew about 10 cups of espresso before you have to empty it out.
Maintenance is much less work than other espresso machines because they need to be descaled 3 times more often as the Pixie. Some espresso machines even require you to hire a professional to come to your house and descale it for you.
More Details About The Nespresso Pixie
How Much Should You Pay?
Depends on where you shop, you’ll also have to pay shipping, which could cost you an additional $20 or more.
If you shop at an online store that also has a physical location in your area, you will end up having to pay sales tax, which will add about $10 to $20 to your total.
I have found Amazon.com/Nespresso-Pixie-Best Price to be the best place to shop. They have the best price I can find, and they are also offering free shipping.
Since they don’t have a physical location, most of you won’t have to pay sales tax.
How Big Is The Water Tank?
The water tank holds 24 oz of water. It’s the perfect size for a single serving machine.
What If I Want To Use A Bigger Cup?
They Thought About That Too. You can flip the cup tray up and use a taller cup or a to go bottle.
What Are The Color Options?
There are plenty of color options for the Nespresso Pixie. Just note that each color has different price points, even thought they are all the same machine.
Any Additional Accessories Needed?
You get everything you need to make a great cup of espresso right out of the box. Nespresso even send you a sample pack of capsules FREE so you can start right away.
All you need is a cup.
If you want steam milk and foam, there is a separate Aeroccino Plus Milk Steam you can purchase.
If that’s the case, I would suggest the Bundle Pack, you’ll save $30 (the price for the Aeroccino Plus is $100 if you buy it separately).
The Nespresso Pixie Machine comes with a one year warranty.
When I was doing research, I also relied on what other people had to say about the Nespresso Pixie. I found them to be extremely helpful, so I decided to include them here as well.
EXCELLENT ESPRESSO!!!, July 11, 2011 By Maria C. (Eastchester, NY)
My husband…absolutely LOVES it! Every day he would use his little old fashioned espresso maker to make himself a cup…he admitted to me that the espresso is absolutely positively fantastic.
My New Best Friend, July 19, 2011 By HeyJoe! (Minneapolis, MN)
I am SO glad I gave it a chance. Not only is is minuscule compared to the semi-automatic machine that it is replacing on my kitchen island, but it is very fast, problem free and really a joy to use.
Works GREAT!, January 12, 2012 By Catherine Tweed “tweediecat” (Pasadena, CA)
I tried literally every coffee maker with pods on the market (keurig, Tassimo, CBTL, etc). I didn’t like the coffee in any of them, as convenient as they are. This is by far the best coffee..
Finally…found the one!, May 5, 2012 By Scotty954
…sampled the product at a local store and that was it, I bought it immediately. I have had the machine for 2 months now and can say that this machine produces hands down the best espresso and “European” style American coffee I have had in recent years.
Who Should Purchase The Nespresso Pixie Espresso Machine?
This espresso machine is so flexible, it’s almost perfect for everyone and everywhere.
- For those who don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on grinders, traditional espresso machines and accessories.
- For those who don’t want the headache of making your own espresso shots(it’s much harder than you think) and not getting the result you wanted. It doesn’t get any easier than the Pixie.
- For those who don’t have that much space. Dorms, offices, small apartments, RVs, boats…etc.
- For those who want a wide variety of espresso flavors.
- For those who want consistently great tasting espresso.
- For those who are looking for a great present for students, friends and family members. Trust me, this will be the coolest gift they’ve received in a long time.
If that sounds like you, then you might be onto something.
Are There Complaints?
As with anything else in life, nothing is absolutely perfect. As much as people love this machine, there are a couple of things I want to bring to your attention.
1.) Capsules. The con is the capsules are made by Nespresso, and you can only use theirs. But on the flip side, they offer the best price anywhere…so it’s not the worst thing in the world.
2.) Needs a separate milk steamer/frother. This is meant to be a very compact machine, so there is no built in milk steamer. On the plus side, if you don’t need one or already have one, you don’t have to pay the extra cost. The choice is yours. You might want to consider the Pixie/Steamer bundle . If you buy them separately, it will cost you $30 more.
3.) You might be drinking more coffee. That is obviously said tongue in cheek. The reason people say that is because this machine is so fast, so easy to use, and makes such delicious espresso, they find themselves wanting more.
There you have it. I don’t believe either one of those issues should stop you from considering the Pixie. As far as the functionality, quality, and ease of use, there have been nothing but high marks.
Final Word On The Nespresso Pixie Espresso Machine
If you are like me, who wants a great cup of espresso drink with ZERO hassle, then the Nespresso Pixie might be perfect for you. This neat little gadget has been popular in Europe for years, and you know the Europeans love their coffee. If it passes their taste test, I know it will pass yours.
It will save you money, time and a lot of headache. Your mornings will be a joy instead of the fun and pleasure of conducting what seems like a chemistry experiment as you would a traditional espresso maker.
All the 5 out of 5 star reviews can’t be wrong.
Where To Buy?
In my opinion, the best place to purchase the Nespresso Pixie Machine is Amazon.com/Nespresso Pixie Sale. I’ve been comparing prices a while now, and Amazon consistently has the best price.
You can even compare prices from dozens of sellers. Icing on the cake is they are offering free shipping right now. Other places charge as much as $20 or more to ship. Amazon is also one place that charges zero sales tax in most States…that will save you even more money.
There are also plenty of user feedback you can read through if you want to hear what others are saying about the Pixie.
I’m not sure when the sale will end, hopefully you are in time to take advantage of it.
